Taking the Calais–Dover ferry without your own car leaves you with a small hurdle in Dover: the Eastern Docks terminal is outside the centre, and the nearest station — Dover Priory — is a good mile away. The good news: there are several easy ways onward. Here's a step-by-step from the ship to your train to London.

🚶 Not booked your crossing yet? Fares, luggage rules and check-in without a vehicle are covered in our Dover–Calais foot passenger guide.

From Dover Ferry Terminal to the Train: Step by Step

After docking, a free shuttle bus run by the ferry operator takes you from the ship to the passenger terminal — foot passengers aren't allowed to walk inside the port. From the terminal you then have three options:

1

First: shuttle from ship to terminal

On arrival, foot passengers are taken by shuttle bus from the ship to the passenger terminal (included in your ticket). Walking inside the port isn't allowed for safety reasons. You then clear UK border control — have your passport ready.

Option A – Taxi to the station (fastest)

There's a taxi rank right outside the terminal. The ride to Dover Priory station or the town centre takes only about 5 minutes and costs around £10–15. The most comfortable option if you have luggage. Confirm the fare before you set off.

Option B – On foot (free, ~25 min)

Dover Priory station is a good mile (around 1.6 km) from the terminal — about 25 minutes on foot, mostly flat with a gentle climb up to the station. Fine without heavy bags, awkward with suitcases. The route isn't fully pedestrian-friendly throughout, so save it on your phone first.

Option C – Stagecoach bus

Stagecoach South East runs local buses between the port area and the station. It's cheap, but doesn't run around the clock at a tight frequency — check times in advance, especially for early arrivals or late evenings.

Then: train from Dover Priory to London

From Dover Priory the high-speed train (HS1) reaches London St Pancras in just over an hour. Slower, usually cheaper services run to London Charing Cross and Victoria (around 2 hrs). Canterbury is just about 25 minutes away.

Which Option Suits You? Time & Cost Compared

The best choice depends on whether you have luggage, how much time you have and how budget-conscious you are. As a rough guide:

For most travellers with luggage, combining a taxi and the high-speed train is the best balance of speed and effort. If you want to save and you're flexible, pair the walk or bus with a slower train service to Charing Cross or Victoria.

Important for foot passengers: On Calais–Dover it's mainly P&O Ferries that currently carries foot passengers, and usually only in daytime. If you're travelling without a car, check foot-passenger availability directly with the operator. With your own vehicle this doesn't apply — you simply drive off the ship.
Tip for connections: Allow plenty of time. After docking you need time for the shuttle, border control and getting to the station — budget at least 45–60 minutes from arrival before your train departs.
