If you're catching an early ferry from Calais to Dover, nobody enjoys setting off in the middle of the night. A night in or around Calais removes the time pressure — in the morning it's often just a few minutes to the terminal. But not every hotel is equally handy: some sit on the beach, some by the station, others out at Coquelles near the Eurotunnel. Here's which area suits your trip.

The Best Areas to Stay in Calais

Calais is compact, but your hotel's location shapes the morning before you sail. Four areas are worth considering:

1

Calais Nord / near the ferry port

The handiest area for the ferry: hotels in Calais Nord and around the centre are often just 0.7–1.2 km from the terminal. In the morning you're at check-in within minutes, with the beach, lighthouse and restaurants all walkable.

2

Town centre / by the station

Around Calais-Ville and Rue Royale you'll find plenty of mid-range and budget hotels, often with restaurants and bars within walking distance — ideal if you want dinner out. The ferry port is only a few minutes by car.

Coquelles / Cité Europe (near Eurotunnel)

On the edge of town at Coquelles sit many chain hotels right by the A16 and the Cité Europe shopping centre. Handy if you're actually taking the Eurotunnel, or want cheap fuel and shopping first. A bit further from the ferry port (about 10–15 min).

On the beach (Calais Plage)

Right on the seafront promenade there are studios and hotels with sea views — lovely for a relaxed evening before you travel, looking out over the Channel. Around 5–10 minutes by car to the terminal depending on location.

Tip for early crossings: Check-in at many hotels is only from 3pm, with check-out often at 11am. For a very early ferry (before 8am) that's plenty — but ask whether breakfast is flexible or whether you can get a breakfast pack if you have to leave before serving time.
How much time do I need in the morning? Allow at least 60–90 minutes at the terminal before departure (90–120 min in summer). From a hotel in Calais Nord that's often just a few driving minutes plus time for border control and check-in.
